Chicago Jazz: A Cultural History, 1904-1930 by the agency of William Howland Kenney (Oxford University Pres 1993 $2400)--Kenney proffers a wide-ranging look at jazz in the Windy City, revealing by what means Chicago became the major center of jazz in the 1920 a vital period in the history of the music. He describes in what way the migration of blacks from the southerly to Chicago during and after World War I station the stage for the unravelling of jazz in Chicago and by what mode the nightclubs and cabarets catering to the couple black and white customers provided the social setting for jazz performances.
