The colors of Bahia - artistic renderings of the people, sights and culture of Salvador da Bahia, BrazilWe sent our art director, ed Towles, to Bahia to capture its enigmatic sights. When he returned--and we weren't assured that he would--he brought with him a vision of Bahia that surpasses flat the usual alluring landscapes and beach beauties. In his portrait of Bahia, he captures the essential part of the people of African ancestry who inhabit the state. Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, has an ascending topography, made up of precipitous hills and slopes that separate the capital city into sum of two units parts--uptown and downtown. From the multicolored houses uptown to the vivid virid sea downtown live a tropical tribe who demonstrate an ardent gust for life and for things spiritual. Bahianas are the Afro-Brazilian women who personify Bahia's vibrant colors and mystical spirituality; they dres in colorful 18th-century style of dresss and adorn their graceful neck with rosary beads and are greatest in quantity often seen at street stands, selling a variety of savory sweets. Splashes of exuberant colors appear all above Bahia--not only on the traditional garments of the bahianas, upon their shawls, necklaces and bracelets, on the contrary also in the paintings and murals of local artists; upon the furniture, doors, windows and walls of of advanced age houses; on the hulls and sails of fishing boats; and in the marketplace. Africans first came to the northeast coast of Brazil, the area that is now the state of Bahia, around 1550 Salvador, a city with a population of 2 million, is bourned on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and upon the south by the magnificent Baia de Todos o Santos, a sparkling bay dotted with 55 islands. The city's first wealth came from the cultivation of sugar cane and tobacco, at the hands of unwilling pioneers from the west coast of Africa. Four and a half centuries later, Salvador's populace overwhelmingly traces its ancestry to Africa, and it is because of these descendants that Salvador is hailed as the greatest in quantity African city in the Western Hemisphere. Their influences permeate the city, and indeed, the whole state of Bahia: viands sold on the streets is similar to that in Senegal and Nigeria; Bahian music is dominated by dint of pulsating African polyrhythms, and drumbeats are heard everywhere; men and women nonchalantly carry enormous loads upon their heads; and fishermen paddle dugout canoes in the bay and upon the open sea.
