White on Black. - book reviewsWhite upon Black by Jan Nederveen Pieterse (Yale University Pres 1992 $3500) - While working in Europe Rufus Collins, an African-American theater director, began collecting caricatures of blacks that had lengthy been taboo in the United States - golliwogs in England and Black Peter in the Netherlands. In 1989 the collection was exhibited at the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam, and Pieterse was asked to do the preparatory research. White upon Black is an outgrowth of that research.
