Forest no factory

What a coincidence - no sooner does the MultiDAT appear upon our shores than your editorial appears upon my desk the day after the 2006 National Forest Industry Exhibition & Clinics finishes here in Rotorua (the heart of NZ forestry and entertainer of the event that offers every four years). And observe and behold one of the clinics which our organization was running included a presentation by the agency of the consulting firm ready to introduce MultiDATs into fresh Zealand.

While the "team players" are slightly varied from Canada to NZ - forest proprietors rather than stumpage buyers - the source of tensions is similar. It will approach as no surprise that it is forest contractors who attend to suffer most from any sort of analysis that takes place away from the place of abode of the "random variables" which thus often occur on a contractor's worksite - a 'non-traditional' work environment fraught with productivity-sapping traps for the unsuspecting or inexperienced. Inaccurate inventory planning, constant production a whole changes, poor seasonal planning, poor stock chain log stock control, short notice work stoppages and ignorance of external factors causing changes in material for burning labour and other costs are all factors high upon contractors' "could be improved by the agency of forest owners list." Nor do you ne a MultiDAT to analyze any of these.

There is a real recognition of the ne for production a whole s in our forest industries to be continuously improved - what regularly frustrates many forest contractors is the lack of interest in solutions involving their input, and the proliferation of of recent origin ideas that emerge from desk-bound foresters and computer-toting supervisors.

Thanks for the "heads-up" upon MultiDAT - as we all propel forward, we do so with more lay open eyes.

Regards,

John Stulen Chief Executive,
