Xevious: The Avenger (NES Classic)
Xevious should be a familiar name to crusty elderly guys who remember the of advanced age arcades. Not your modern DDR-infested teenybopper hangout or your soulles violence-free tap or pat E. Cheese, mind you. The real arcades, back when the best way to secure your game on involved braving the stygian profunditys of a dank, dark parlor replete of acrid smoke and scary teen sporting multiple piercings and bad tattoos. Where family respectfully lined up their quarters upon the cigarette-scarred bezel of satellite Patrol to claim next game, and a flawless playthrough of Dragon's Lair could command the attention of everyone in the sweep Back then, arcade games still did this crazy little thing called "innovating." It was easier then, since the medium was novel and most ideas hadn't been tried at the same time (Those that had been attempted hadn't always been attempted well.) And that's Xevious' claim to fame; while it looks to be a rather slow-paced, limited and generally fun-yet-unremarkable top-down shooter by dint of today's standards, in 1983 it was like nothing other anyone had played before. In a true literal sense, as a matter of fact: it was the first top-down shooter at any time Before 1943, before GunBird, before Radiant Silvergun, Xevious created the genre and it established a fair number of standards in the proces At its core, Xevious wasn't terribly different than various Space Invaders knock-offs, including Namco's have a title to Galaxian series. Rather, the game stood apart end its details. While previous space shooter limited players' motion a linear, left-to-right plane, Xevious gave players a filled 360 degree of movement for their ship, the Souvalou. The action shifted from the inky blackness of Galaga's exterior space setting to a terrestrial environment; by means of adding the element of a landscape below the Souvalou, Namco brought into play a next to the first plane of interaction. In addition to the standard forward cannons, the Souvalou also featured a short-range bomb attack which could take without ground-based targets. This effectively multiplied the complexity of Xevious' gameplay above its predecessors: instead of only dodging enemy patterns and lasers, players also had to line up bombing step quicklys to take out stationary fire-arm emplacements and moving tanks. To further up the ante, Namco gave the enemies an innovative escalating AI a whole which allowed the computer to upgrade its forces to compensate for the player's vigors And for that final special touch of greatness, the game introduced the universal of boss battles to the genre with gigantic fortress ships which lurked at the extreme point of certain combat sections. All of this is to say that Xevious is a authentic classic. The Souvalou moves at a somewhat glacial pace and the graphics are hopelessly flat, on the other hand besides those shortcomings it's still a phenomenal action game. The NE version was impressively real to the arcade version -- while not a completed conversion, it was startingly accurate, especially for like an early third-party game. And as a testament to Namco's early brilliance, it remains a great play. Xevious is a sterling example of the classic seminary of top-down shooters; people who address the slower, more strategic and methodical bre of shooting action to the post-Psikyo flavor (in which each object on the screen vomits centurys of projectiles in all directions) could do a allotment worse than to spend a not many hours with this one. The of recent origin ability to save scores definitely adds an extra dimension to this single -- it's one of those rare games in which trying to top your possess best score can become a hopeles compulsion. And that's a useful thing. Xevious may not be the best-known titles in the NE Classic line-up, on the other hand it's easily one of the best. Be assured to grab a copy, plane if you're not planning to assemble the entire set. Unless, you know, you just have something against fun Copyright ?© 2004 Ziff Davis Media Inc.
