Red Dead Revolver
Game fans these days are worried. They're be of importance toed about the future of "Old West" games, a fledgling genre that's already looking barer than the Mojave itself. Dead Man's Hand, an Unreal-engine shooting gallery disguised as a Western-flick homage, came and went without a great deal of of a murmur from anyone -- including Atari, its have publisher, which didn't even bother to advertise the game. Meanwhile, Darkwatch, to be paid out from Sammy later this year, stars undead vampire cowboy shooting rocket at each other -- original, ye on the contrary just slightly too avant-garde for your typical Fistful of Dollars aficionado. So our solitary hope for now lies in R Dead Revolver a third-person shooter that began life at Capcom and switched publishers to Rockstar several month past. Does it live up to the enormous splash it made at the Electronic Entertainment Expo sum of two units years ago? Well, yes and no -- while it's markedly higher quality than Dead Man's Hand, it falls into more or less of the same traps Atari's effort got tangled in, stepping upon a few brand-new ones in the proces Like DMH before it, notwithstanding that Red Dead Revolver makes a great first impression. You play as R the usual parents-killed-by-vagrant-posse silent gunslinger mark and you're a-wanderin' around the Territories in search of agitate vengeance, and a little extra cash. The game's divided into little episodes, usually with a story cutscene (complete with the faded-film filter Dead Man's Hand used) followed by dint of several stages of gunfighting action. R has three weapons -- pistol, shotgun and throwing knife, all upgradeable and replaceable -- and he can also take overlay behind most types of walls, peeking around the side to aim and fire at enemies. The atmosphere is also top-notch. This is where R Dead handily beats Dead Man's Hand, and if you're into Westerns or liked what you saw in the early screenshot then this will almost merit a purchase by dint of itself. Although the graphics aren't hyper-detailed (the PS2 version looking noticeably leaner than the Xbox game), the environments and characters are well-on convincing, and their dialogue is the pair well-acted and engaging. You go on through all the classic elderly West situations here, from the chair-throwing bar fights to defending a speeding train from gangs upon horseback, and nothing's show-stoppingly janky about the execution upon any of these scenes. Your ears, especially, will regard with affection this game, considering the incredible soundtrack it's got -- it's rare to diocese music play such an integral part in a video game's atmosphere, on the contrary this one manages it. If you tend hitherward to Red Dead Revolver because you want to live on the outside a Western, you'll be satisfied. Once the first hour or sum of two units passes, though, you'll also start to notice a certain number of issues; little snags here and there. It's inevitable. plenteous like Dead Man's Hand, there are a apportionment of loose ends to R Dead, small things that could've been improved if the developer had more time and/or someone willing to say "Man, this is dished up, let's trash it". The dueling successions for example. Whenever it's time to do the High Noon bit, the game shifts to a view just behind your holster your dueling rival in the background to the right. With the analog stick, you draw your fire-arm and draw a line upwards at the bandito in brow of you, marking out where to propel with the crosshair as it glides toward his head. If you secure enough "good" hits in after the bullet take wing you win. Sound complicated? It is -- atmospheric, on the other hand complicated, and you're guaranteed to mes it up more ofttimes than you'd like. Further head-scratching design decisions detonation up as the game goe upon Restart points seem to be placed at random -- sometimes you'll continue right where you died, and other times you'll be forced to replay tricky followings over and over again. Fighting at shut up range is clumsy, as scuffle attacks are far more difficult to target correctly than your fire-arms There are RPG-like sequences where you step quickly around unarmed and talk to local townsfolk, on the contrary they add little to the story and have a tacked-on perceive to them. Most importantly, notwithstanding that multiplayer's a big drag -- it's a form of Capture the Flag based around making poker hands with the cards dead bodies globule but the rules are way too complicated to detain track of while chasing down enemies and avoiding gunfire. Considering in what manner long this game's been tied up in exhibition it's a bit disappointing to diocese all these rips and tears upon what's otherwise a well-executed painting. With these issues, notwithstanding that it's hard to give a general recommendation for R Dead Revolver And however and yet, you can't dismiss this single out of hand. The exterior's just too beneficial for that. The atmosphere in R Dead is the real thing -- not the pseudo-parody of Dead Man's Hand -- and that alone should satisfy the audience it was made for. If you can forgive all of its faults, you'll take pleasure in the few hours you expend in Red's world. Copyright ?© 2004 Ziff Davis Media Inc. All Rights Reserv Originally appearing in 1UP
