All-Star Baseball 2005

The baseball season is underway (the video-game baseball season, anyway), and already we've got a clear contender in MVP Baseball 2004 EA's revamped simulation-heavy take upon the sport has established itself as the game to beat this year, and single can't help but get the impression (however false it may be) that the other four baseball companies are playing a futile game of catch-up with their have a title to offerings.

Take All-Star Baseball 2005 for example, with Derek Jeter upon the cover and more features than a Honda Accord with all the options included. Despite the six dozen stadiums, Fieldercam (tm) and enough hitting interfaces to hold fast you entertained all week, Acclaim's baseball franchise doesn't stray all that far from its year-in, year-out foundations. In fact, the of recent origin features -- most obviously the gimmicky fielding -- detract from basic play more than they contribute, meaning you'll either ignore them or maledict them off whenever they rear their ordinary head. It's a bit of a mes at times, on the contrary if you find this kitchen-sink approach to baseball fascinating, you'll find that ASB really isn't all that bad. Whether "not all that bad" is profitable enough for the MVP Baseball throng however, is up for debate. (Likely not a drawn out one.)

Since Acclaim is touting Fieldercam (tm) above all of ASB's other additions this year, let's tackle it first. Do you remember Bases Loaded 3 upon the NES? It's a true old game, yes (it had Ryne Sandberg upon the cover), but its fielding a whole which portrayed the action from a viewpoint somewhere in the outfield stands, was at no time used by another baseball game before or since. Until now. by the agency of default, Fieldercam (tm) throws the camera behind the nearest infielder or outfielder whenever a batter hits the ball, the idea being each hit is exciting and you'll have feeling closer to the action. Unfortunately, this is really a case of video games trying to be too real. You procure a lot of help in Fieldercam (tm) method it's true -- the ball has trails and outfielders gain a little arrow showing where take wing balls will drop. However, the perspective makes it hard to gauge by what mode high the ball is and in what way far away your fielder is from it. The result? smooth after several games, you'll be with equal reason disoriented that routine ground balls will pass by dint of you with alarming consistency.

ASB's fielding a whole may be more annoying than innovative, on the other hand don't worry -- you can turn round it off if you proffer regular video fielding. Unless you can't. diocese when playing online, you're forced to use Fieldercam (tm) whether you like it or not -- which planes the playing field, yes, on the other hand also turns your average online team to the "before" version of the Cleveland Indians in Major League. You're also stuck with this view in the "This Week in Baseball Challenge" fashion a situational game where you replay pivotal jiffys from the 2003 season. Think you can succe where Moises Alou failed in the National League championship series? Yeah, right -- prepare to miss the ball, and then watch the loading guard for a few moments after each attempt. Arrgh.

In a way, Acclaim's marketing might have been pushing the unjust feature this year. Fieldercam (tm) is a bust, on the other hand the core gameplay is still intact, and it's looking real healthy. Pitching and hitting will be straightforward if you're familiar with the series -- throwing the ball is a simple matter of choosing a pitch and pressing a button, while you can select one of several hitting courses depending on how much dominion government you like over your swing. The timing behind swatting at a pitch looks a little "off" at first compared to other games, on the contrary you get used to it after a scarcely any innings. Fielding with the wacky-cam not on is also straightforward, although your outfielders look a little sluggish when picking up the ball and throwing it back to the infield.

The ease of the game is also admirably handled. The franchise manner doesn't get into the worrying profunditys of EA or Sony's games, on the contrary all the basics are there, and taking your created team to the World Series is engaging. The graphics are nicely detailed, and ASB looks to be the victor this year in limits of stadiums -- there are above 80 of 'em, from the usual pro parks to spring training fields. The player animation and detail be deprived ofs out to MVP, but it's not a shoddy production.

Really, the worst you can say about this year's All-Star is that it doesn't stick without from the crowd much, despite all its novel (and well-trademarked) bonuses. If you can ignore the gimmickry and the middle-of-the-road visuals, you'll find an entertaining baseball game that'll retain you just as engaged as the quiet of the crop this year. MVP Baseball has little to worry about, on the other hand there are far, far worse ways to knock forty bucks.
