Final Fantasy V

Prior to Final Fantasy IX, whenever you'd ask FF series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi which of his creations was his favorite, he'd probably answer with Final Fantasy V We can single speculate on his reasons, on the other hand one possible explanation might be that Sakaguchi was a game creator first and foremost, and FFV was the apex of Final Fantasy as a game rather than a story.

The story, in fact, is beautiful weak: a group of youths called the Light Warriors band together to fight the evil, dimension-destroying X-Death from the X-Zone Really, you can't make up piece of ground summaries this trite, and when sandwiched between the epic sweep of FFIV upon the one hand and the somber, gritty FFVI upon the other, it's easy to diocese why FFV gets a bad rap. That its sole American appearance was as a poorly-emulated version of the game upon a PSone disc, with a lousy translation straight without of the early 16-bit days, didn't help its case at all.

But the gameplay … well, that was something different. It's something of a myth that Final Fantasy games have no gameplay these days, on the contrary there's no denying that the amount of freedom and customization in the earlier FF games was remarkable; it's maybe emblematic of Sakaguchi's selections in a Final Fantasy game that he was in the way that eager to create an MMORPG within the franchise, where each player could have a unique character. The real first FF game let you decide the classes for each one of the four heroes, and FFV is no different. What changed in the interim is that FFV doesn't restrict you to those initial choices, on the other hand instead lets you explore the filled range of jobs and abilities the game has to offer

"Jobs" and "abilities" are fairly specialized bourns by now within the world of Final Fantasy, for a like reason some definition of them is vital to understanding FFV (Which, to be fair, wasn't the first FF game to feature the piece of work system -- that was FFIII upon the Famicom, which remains the single game in the series not ever to appear in English upon some system or another.) A piece of work is just FF's spin upon a character class; typical piece of works in FFV are things like Warrior, Black Mage, or Thief. Giving a character in FFV a piece of work allows them to earn AP, or Ability Points in battle, and when they realize enough of those, they learn Abilities. (Though it should be noted that the proces of learning and sharing abilities was still a little primitive and inflexible when compared to later implementations of the general or abstract notion such as Final Fantasy Tactics.)

So far, this is all bonny standard. What makes things a little more interesting is that one time an Ability is learned, the character can still equip it one time they've switched classes, which allows a White Mage to equip Black Magic as well. a certain quantity of useful abilities are innate to the class, with equal reason mixing and matching, and prioritizing piece of works you want the character to swell in vs. jobs you barely want the character to know a small in number abilities from, is where greatest in quantity of FFV's strategy comes into play.

What makes all this merriment is the multiplicity of piece of works available to try out. In a normal FF game, where each character has his or her be in possession of specific class, there are at no time more than a handful of basic classes available by the agency of necessity. But when each character has the option to switch upon the fly, then Square was able to provide a certain number of more exotic classes like the Berserker, or the Geomancer, or the Mime (which made its first attempt in FFV). Acquiring new piece of works is paced out just right completely through the game; you get single or two far-out jobs in each place along with several other more traditional classes.

The piece of work system is making a stout comeback these days -- Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Final Fantasy X-2 and Final Fantasy XI all make use of it in a certain number of form or another, and all are coming without at about the same time above here. It's enough to make you amazement if maybe Sakaguchi had the right idea about the best FF all along.
