Gradius V
Gradius V is still really, really hard. on the other hand the players at the Tokyo Game exhibit didn't seem to mind this individual bit, which suggests some kind of constitutional superiority in the Japanese genome with regard to detailed hand-eye coordination. In the sum of two units levels of the E3 demo and the fresh interior stage of the TG version, Japanese players were plainly clearing the boards with cleverly powered-up Vic Vipers, which was enough to acutely embarass at least this Western on-looker In American players' defense the TG demo present the appearanceed to also incorporate an upgraded sway scheme, which presents a abundant clearer picture of how the finished game will play when it ships this fall in Japan. While the classic Gradius power-up a whole hasn't changed very much -- you still build from one side progressive levels of speed boost missiles, lasers, and satellite Options -- the weapon command scheme has received one actual major addition. As E3-vintage screenshot indicated, in addition to picking from four Option formations, you can now direction the direction of laser fire from your Options. It's a little like Smash TV since the direction of the ship's move and the direction of fire are now independent of each other. Options are now far more deadly, since it's easy to use them to clear enemies from above or below. Before, it took careful effort and missile placement to wipe on the outside pesky ground-based gun turrets. Now, they're sitting plunges for a heavily-armed Viper. This feature is especially useful in the extra horizontal shown at TGS. It's still not clear by what mode the finished game's seven horizontals will fit together -- the super-tough stone level that was second at E3 is supposedly going to wind up the sixth in the final game -- on the contrary this new stage feels more like an introductory challenge. It's a slow-paced stage with a destiny of interior areas, where you have to carefully slip in and without of enclosed spaces and take on the outside a lot of walking enemies upon floors and ceilings. The novel option controls and formations make that a destiny easier, especially in segments which switch to vertical scrolling without changing the Vic Viper's horizontal orientation. It hardly bears repeating, of course, on the other hand Gradius V still looks beautiful. The 3D modeling has the clean gaze of Ikaruga mixed with all the familiar Gradius visual suggestions -- the formations of enemies, the floating amoebas, the waves of asteroids, and the split-nosed Vic Viper. Like Ikaruga, there are plenitude of perspective-twisting 3D effects, as the action sticks to a 2D plane, on the contrary the background tilts and spins each which way. All that really remains are the Moais, which haven't popp up in any demo as nevertheless but we can trust they'll be done right upon PS2. As by usual, the Japanese get to play this individual first -- before the novel year, while it's a Q1 2004 release in the states. We'll make experiment of and get our hands upon more details before then, although and at the very least you can wait for import impressions later in the fall. Copyright ?© 2004 Ziff Davis Media Inc.
