One Week with Boktai

The day-star among other things, was in our hands when we gave Konami's environmentally-sound RPG a real-world proof

Boktai is the latest work of mad genius from Konami's real own Victor Von Frankenstein of game design, Hideo Kojima. A trained organ of vision can easily see his fingerprints all above the game. Besides the obvious fact that it's basically an isometric undead Metal Gear Solid minus the religious discourses on nuclear disarmament, Boktai also demonstrates Kojima's delight in for messing with gamers' minds. He is, after all, the same man who extreme pointed the most anticipated action game of 2001 with a two-hour thesis upon the impact of digital media upon society. The man who one time expressed a desire to create a game that could "hurt the player."

Boktai not at any time quite goes to those most distants But it still does an impressive piece of work of bending the player's experience to Kojima's mercurial whims courtesy of the built-in solar sensor. After all, everyone knows you can't slay the undead in the dark of night -- you ne the day-star on your side. Unlike Resident Evil or Castlevania (games which were made to be played in the wee hours of the night), Boktai forces you procure out and face down the evil number and his legion of zombies and vampires. The game can't be complet unles you soak up a certain quantity of serious rays. Just a gimmick, or a nefarious effort to force the average gamer to add a little color to his have a title to vampire-esque pallor? Whatever this case, this is a game that takes its tagline -- "The day-star is in Your Hands" -- seriously.

But what about family who can't spend their days in the sun? What of gamers who work in a windowless office from sunup to sundown? What of consumer who live in the artic circle and dispose of half their year in a state of perpetual darkness? What of nation who live in cities garmented by fog and smog, like London or Seattle or beholds Angeles?

1UP's offices are located in single such city. Specifically San Francisco, a place infamous for The nebulosity -- a thick, dark slab of water vapor which loom permanently above the residential district. It's a allotment like the Mist of Final Fantasy IX, in fact: hazy, gloomy and everywhere. (Granted, it isn't poisonous and doesn't spawn infinite enormitys to battle in unexpected random battles. on the other hand besides that, they're exactly alike.)

This Boktai Play Diary details individual San Franciscan's brave efforts to learn to be fond of Kojima's latest exercise in audience manipulation despite the dreary, sunles nature of his place of abode

Friday

10:36 a.m.

The day-star is shining as I walk to the local EB Games to purchase my copy of Boktai, which I take to be a beneficial omen. Unlike the rest of San Francisco, the downtown area where I work receives a little sunlight almost daily, flat if it's just for half an hour. on what account this is the case, I don't really know -- maybe it's because the downtown area is further from the coast, or perhaps the city fathers forged a pact with an eldritch the first cause to keep the skies above Comerica Park clear on game days. Or maybe it's just the material substance heat rising from all the inebriateds passed out in the alleyways.

Whatever the reason, the downtown canopy of heaven doesn't usually clear off until after luncheon so the fact that it's warm and bright this early in the day present the appearances to bode well for the Boktai experience ahead of me I slap down my hard-earned cash to claim a transcript of the game and pace forward into the morning sunshine, determined to place an end to the evil Count's reign of darkness.

4:21 pm
It turn rounds out my noble intents had to be deposit on hold for a while, since it's tough to compress anything resembling video gaming into the daily site production routine. And here you meditation all we did all day at the office was challenge single another to Halo deathmatches.

Unfortunately, by the agency of the time I finally have a chance to give Boktai a spin, the nebulositys have shuffled gloomily back into the heavens The cramped sliver of window beside my desk reveals a hopelessly grey cityscape below.

Sitting in brow of my computer, I spring into action as best I can: through switching on my GBA and beginning a game. Before I can begin, the game asks for all sorts of personal data: my name, the date, my time band my hometown, my social security number, my credit card info.... I know Boktai's cartridge has a solar sensor built-in; I just reliance it doesn't contain some sort of wireless transmitter as well to harvest all this information.

The game begins with a brief dialogue and immediately kicks into Metal Gear manner - I find myself sneaking around zombies with incredibly limited cone of vision and acute gullibility. At least this time I'm battling animated corpses, whose putrefying organs could ostensibly account for their stupidity and blockish senses. I don't know what the Genome Soldiers' excuse is.

After getting a have feeling for the gameplay, and being knobed by a few zombies whose rotting reflexe are still sharper than mine, I save and close up down and get back to more pressing piece of works Like Halo deathmatches. Er, I mean, producing graphics for the website. Right.
