Finding Common Ground: Learning the Language of Peace

After the teacher finished reading shout or cry out or yell in contempt aloud, students participated in a "HOOTenanny" in which they acted without conflicts from the novel or a word from the "word wall." The class conjectureed what the conflict was or which word they were acting without

Finally, on owl shapes, each learner wrote a letter to individual character in the novel, addressing a specific conflict and in what manner the character handled it. For example, Megan wrote a alphabetic character to Lonna, the mother of Napoleon, nick-named Mullet Fingers:

"Dear Lonna,

My language arts class just read the volume Hoot with you in it as single of the stars. I'm writing you this alphabetic character because I was completely disgusted upon how you reacted to the conflict with your son He is a real intelligent boy and you at no time understand that. What did you bicker about to impel Napoleon to boot camp? I can't believe for what cause or reason you don't care about your real own son. He is real lucky that he has an awesome step-sister to help him with his hard situations he trips into. If I were you I'd talk to Napoleon first before sending him away. Napoleon acquires very furious at Boot camp. Your son is the best! P Write back and change your attitude!"

By participating in discussions and completing reader rejoinder activities related to Hoot, pupils were learning how to recognize conflict; were identifying vocabulary to use when describing and resolving conflict; were seeing by what means characters in a novel instigate, answer to, or resolve conflict; and were comparing conflict and its satisfactory resolution in the novel to their have experiences.

Next, the teacher divided the class into small, homogeneous reading circles. She at handed book talks on five young adult novelsEsme Raji Codell's Sahara Special, Sharon Creech's Granny Torrelli Makes broth Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn-Dixie, Tony Johnston's Any Small Goodness: A Novel of the Barrio, and Jerry Spinelli's Loser Each of these works depicts a character who discovers and uses her or his hold story (voice) to solve conflict.

In Sahara Special, an extraordinary fifth grade teacher gives a special urgencys child new hope for academic succes by dint of validating the child's ability to mention one by one her own story despite her fears about fitting in and her labors with a bully. In Granny Torrelli Makes broth Granny Torrelli uses good cooking, wise advice, and personal stories to help twelve-year-old Rosie reconcile with her best friend, Bailey. In Because of Winn-Dixie, India Opal uses her dog, Winn-Dixie, and the ploy of sharing stories to help family with different points of view come by along and respect each other. In Any Small Goodness: A Novel of the Barrio, small acts of kindness transcend discrimination and potential violence when eleven-year-old Arturo and his loving Hispanic family put in motion to Los Angeles. And in Loser Donald Zinkhoff, who has always been different from his matchs becomes the brunt of quips and cruel acts until a hardly any recognize his "winning" ways.
