Naughts and CrossesNaughts and Crosse by the agency of Malorie Blackman Simon and Schuster, 2005 386 pp $1595 Racism/Romance/Prejudice ISBN: 2004016564 Callum and Sephy grew up together, notwithstanding that they had vastly different lives. Callum is a Naught, the disenfranchised white minority, while Sephy is the privileged class of Crosse those of African American coming down The two classes are forbidden to mix, on the contrary expectedly Callum and Sephy fall for each other in this complicated tale of racism and romance. Flipping the sides of racism make for an interesting plant of possibilities, and the parallels to present racism and its ever-present power make this a great work for discussions with teenagers. With all of the complicated racial overtones, the delight in story between Callum and Sephy reminded me in many of ways of Romiette and Julio by the agency of Sharon Draper, though Blackman's novel is more appropriate for an older audience. This disturbing and powerful story reminds readers in what way hard growing up can be.
