Where I Want to BeWhere I Want to Be through Adele Griffin Putnam, 2005, 150 pp $1599 Fiction/Mental Illness ISBN: 0-399-23783-6 Two narrative voices run over this story: Lily, a pleasing without being striking popular teenage girl, and Jane, her slightly older schizophrenic sister. The telling is non-linear, and at first, the sum of two units story lines don't seem to tend to the same point which might be off-putting to teen readers demanding a stout story line. Eventually, it becomes clear that Jane is dead, perhaps a suicide, and Lily is guilt-ridden, hiding from her friends, and depending too a great deal of on her boyfriend Caleb. Jane must reduce her jealousy and bitterness. Lily must analyze her guilt at being the normal single and let Caleb go. The writing is imagistic, evocative, and appropriately haunting. The excitement in the story advances more from figuring out in what manner the pieces of the narrative bewilder fit together than from large plat developments.
