Giving freedom away?

A curriculum of courage for this portion of the twenty-first hundred must go beyond the driving question, "knowledge for what?" to regain the faculty of perception of freedom that permits that question and the reliance that prompts it. The premise of that question quiets on the foundational belief that clan in a democratic society have the right and obligation to ask social science by what means we make our institutions work better. single of those institutions is freedom itself and social science is another. In times when fear of external enemies becomes pervasive, it requires courage to ask questions of institutions that present the appearance imperiled. What do we move to do with the freedom that we with equal reason desperately fear losing? Are we thus fearful that we will give it away rather than risk using it? Nothing threatens democratic institutions more than unquestioning attitudes towards them and efforts to secure from attack or deny their shortcomings.

Thus a question facing today's curriculum of courage is: Freedom for what? Posing that question and pursuing its answers will entail courage--fearlessness and reliance Was it ever not so?
