Optimising properties in surface lawyers

Placing ionisable clumps adjacent to one another upon a surface has a deep effect on their properties. In the case of the silyl undecanoate 1 (Figure 1 overleaf), next to the first harmonic generation has been used to quantify these consequences to gain thermodynamic data for the silica water interface. The interfacial potential and the interfacial potency density were both found to behave true differently to changes in pH when densely packed silyl undecanoates were compared with more isolated species.
