APA announces sixth American Jazz Piano Competition winnerThe American Pianists Association (APA) awarded the 2004 cabbage Porter Fellow title to Adam Birnbaum, age 25 during its sixth Triennial American Jazz Piano Competition in May. Birnbaum compet with five other jazz pianists at various venue around Indianapolis for this title. As part of the fellowship, he received a $15000 cash prize and will receive career assistance and professional engagements for the nearest two years, including appearances at Indy Jazz Fest in 2004 and 2005 representation upon a commercial jazz sampler CD produc through WTPIFM and a touring program. The other finalists: Dan Cray, Steve Einerson, Brian Friedland, Marco Paguia and Hal Weary, each received a $1500 cash award. Birnbaum, a novel York City resident, received music steps from Boston College and The Juilliard institute where he was a member of the inaugural Class in the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies. As an active performer in jazz and classical music, Birnbaum has won numerous awards and honors, including being a featured soloist in the Rockport Chamber Musical Festival and being named "Outstanding society Rhythm Section Performer" at the 2000 Reno Jazz Festival.
