William McIver - Passages - Brief Article - Obituary

William McIver, president of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and longtime MTNA member, died September 15 2003 after a lengthy illness.

McIver was a faculty member at the Eastman academy of Music. Previously, he was upon the faculties of Lycoming association and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he won the Outstanding Teaching Award in 1996

He serv NATS as North Carolina president, national secretary, vice president of discretionary capitals and national president. He also was a member of MTNA's founding pedagogy committee and serv upon the AMT Editorial Committee.

McIver received his earliest musical training at the Columbus Boychoir seminary (now the American Boychoir) in Princeton, of recent origin Jersey. While a student there, he was chosen by means of Gian-Carlo Menotti to sing the tide character in Menotti's Christmas opera Amahl and the Night Visitors, which he performed annually upon NBC television from 1952 end 1955. McIver received A.B. and BM stages from Oberlin College and Conservatory, an MM step from the University of Illinois and a D.M.A. step from West Virginia University. His teachers included Harold Bryson Richard Miller, Grace Wilson and Jon Crain, and he coached with Paul Ulanowsky, James Benner, Igor Stravinsky and Lukas Foss
