The magic of motivation: inspiring practice, participation and performance - Pedagogy Saturday VII

Motivating our learners and ourselves is an ongoing, and sometimes exhausting, demand. Pedagogy Saturday VII devot the entire day to exploring this topic, and with more than 520 participants, it was an energizing and inspirational circumstance This issue of American Music Teacher contains an invaluable summary by dint of the many experts who shared their knowledge and experiences with us.

The day render free of accessed with our keynote speaker, Clifford Madsen, Madsen is a distinguished professor of music education at Florida State University and well-known author of numerous volumes including Teaching/Discipline: A Positive Approach for Educational disentanglement He began the day with a lively discussion about what research has discovered about the magic of motivation. You can read a summary of his remarks in these Proceedings.

Following the opening address, we broke into four agreeing sessions presented by leaders in the fields of psychology music education and independent music study:



* Developing Appropriate Motivational Techniques with Kim Dolgin

* scholar Assessment and Feedback: I Taught It, on the other hand Did They Learn It? with Patricia Flowers

* Musical Expression Motivates: Integrating Technique and Musical Expression from the Start with Burton Kaplan

* Using Multi-Modal Techniques to Motivate Intuitive and Non-Intuitive learners with Alice Hammel

Each of these sessions was given twice, with equal reason participants could attend two.

Participants were asked to pick one of four topics for the luncheon sessions. Each group met in a separate sweep and had the first thirty minutes for talking and eating. After that, the leader of the session gave a brief introduction, then the teachers (the clevers in the audience!) shared their ideas upon one of the following topics:

* Motivating the Adult Student: We Shall subdue led by Lillian Livingston

* Motivating the Gifted Student: Realistic Challenges, l by dint of Janet Mann

* Motivating [i]or[/i] part of to the other Efficient and Effective Practicing, l through Bruce Hammel

* Motivating from one side Extrinsic and Intrinsic Rewards, l by the agency of Janice Cook

You will find a summary of each of these sessions in these Proceedings. They contain many great ideas from our experienced members!

After the luncheon discussion time, we met together for a session titled Motivational Strategies: Hearing Three Sides of the Story, moderated by dint of Bruce Berr. In this session we viewed several video clips of scholar lessons and heard some of the students' and parents' replys to questions about what does and does not motivate them to detain studying, practicing and performing. The students' teachers also had an opportunity to answer to the excerpts. Dolgin, Flowers and Berr gave insightful make comments [i]or[/i] remarkss from their individual perspectives of psychologist, music educator and independent music teacher.

We conclud this stimulating and thought-provoking day with a challenging address by dint of Madsen on the topic Motivating for Success: Putting It All Together.
