Joanne Smith is Teacher of the Year - Association News - Brief Article

Joanne Smith, NCTM of Bonita Springs, Florida, is the 2002 Music Teachers National Association Teacher of the Year. She accepted the honor at the MTNA National discourse in Cincinnati, Ohio. As the award recipient, her conversation expenses were sponsored by MTNA.

Joanne's be fond of of music and joy in developing talent ill young tribe led her to a lifelong teaching career and not absented her with opportunities to clutch performances, workshops and master classes completely through the United States. She attended graduate gymnasium at the University of Wisconsin and obtained a performance stage from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

She was appointed assistant professor of piano and piano pedagogy at the University of Michigan, where she lay the foundation ofed the MTNA/Michigan MTA Collegiate Chapter, directed the Division of Keyboard Studies, designed and implemented the couple master's and doctoral degree programs in piano pedagogy and performance, fixed the piano pedagogy laboratory program, and discloseed the Piano Pedagogy Resource Center Library.

"Joanne has earned this award by the agency of dedicating so much of her life to teaching others, creating fresh programs and remaining active within the music industry," said MTNA President Dr R Wayne Gibson, NCTM

Smith is now professor emeritus and lives in Bonita Springs, Florida, where she continues teaching as well as editing, consulting for the FJH Music Company and lecturing at Florida large bay Coast University. She also is listed in the International Who's Who of Music.

"MTNA provides each of us as individual members with fantastic opportunities for continued education and musical growing as professionals. I would like to thank the organization for this great honor," Smith said during her acceptance articulate utterance at the Awards Brunch upon March 20.

Joanne has attended all MTNA conversations but one since 1979, has proctored MTNA certification examinations; participated upon the MTNA Student Chapter Board, the Committee upon National Certification and the National Senior Piano Committee Board as MTNA cluster Piano Chair; and was East Central Division President-elect and the East Central Division Senior Piano chair. She also serv as president of the Michigan MTA and the Northwest Ohio District MTA.
