State convention sessions spark insight - College Faculty Forum - Brief ArticleSusan Tusing, assistant professor of music at Andrew corporation and college faculty chair for Georgia Music Teachers Association (GMTA), and Keith DeFoor, professor of music at Young Harris community and GMTA student chapters chair, co-present a panel discussion upon "Preparing Students for College Music Study" at the 2001 GMTA Convention, held November 1-3 2001 at Columbus State University. A panel consisting of collegiate music professors, music majors and an independent piano teacher discussed the horizontal of preparation for music research by today's college freshmen, career and pursuit trends for musicians, especially regarding the use of technology, and collegiate music opportunities for nonmusic majors. Audience members were welcome to make comments or remarks and ask questions for further discussion over the session, resulting in a true lively and informative exchange. The session was well attended through professors, students and music teachers of high gymnasium students. Many of those in attendance make comments or remarksed on the value of the session, the pair in the ideas presented and the issues raised. Tusing reminded me of a similar session held at fresh Jersey Music Teachers Association's state convention a hardly any years ago. The densely populated state has many independent music and piano teachers' organizations that are not affiliated with MTNA. Five different institutions in of recent origin Jersey invited college faculty to participate in a panel about preparing pupils for collegiate music study. The session was well attended by means of independent teachers as well as community faculty, sparking much discussion. The gathering also reminded us of the importance of providing forums for discussion between independent teachers and community faculty, as well as among guild faculty within the same state. fresh Jersey's CFF members are in the proces of brainstorming about holding inter-collegiate scholar recitals on different campuses over the state. The rationale is to give community students more performance opportunities and to hear and convenient students at other institutions who are involved in similar programs. We confidence the recitals and post-concert receptions also will advance the exchange of ideas and collegiality in a festival-like, noncompetitive atmosphere. I faith to hear from other state CFF members telling us about their activities, or mention one by one me in person at the 2002 MTNA National Conference Looking Toward the Future: MTNA in Cincinnati We have identified an exciting and pertinent topic for our session at the 2002 MTNA National talk in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Monday, March 18 The topic is "Training the subsequent time Teacher: A Look at near and Future Programs." The session will consist of a panel discussion by means of four prominent college music educators and administrators: * J Robert Wills, dean of the body of Fine Arts at Arizona State University, Tempe Arizona, who began his musical career as a singer * Nelita actual NCTM, piano faculty member and former chair of the Piano Department at the Eastman place of education of Music, Rochester, New York * Richard virid director of music at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, educated as a musicologist * Peter file provost, New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, Massachusetts, ethnomusicologist and sitarist We encourage CFF members completely through the country to submit questions and bear upons pertinent to the panel topic via e-mail to me at lehrer@rider.edu. As we have begun to think about our topic, CFF members have give an inkling ofed general issues, such as "How are decisions made whether or not to support music programs?" and "How can pedagogy be promot in all applied departments?" Also, "Are there administrative issues involved in requiring scholars to visit the home studios of independent teachers?" (The idea of having a mentor from within a local association for each pedagogy student was brought up at the MTNA Convention in Washington, DC last March.) Panelists have remind ofed discussing the role of the couple applied and academic faculty in determining exit questions upon graduate oral and written exams. We direct the eye forward to seeing you all in Cincinnati and to greeting you at one as well as the other this session and at our CFF meeting. In the meantime, do allow us hear from you. --Phyllis Alpert Lehrer NCTM National corporation Faculty Forum Chair Kendall Park, of recent origin Jersey She is a professor of piano at Westminster Choir association of Rider University, Princeton, fresh Jersey.
