To a cruel lover who read about me in the paper

What girl wouldn't want to come by a letter from the lover

who had humiliated her in the street

forty years ago? I gues you're not speaking

to us colored folk anymore, he had said,

strolling right past me and the white friend

I was walking with. What girl wouldn't want

to earn a letter that said, I read about a famous

Toi Derricotte in the novels and wonder if that

is the same Toi Webster who lived

on Taylor, who was my friend

so many years ago. I didn't live

in my parents' house,

I survived it. It is sad how

the longing for someone as cruel

kept going, as if,

when I swallowed that dead cat,

my heart, the cruelnes would pass away,

like a prizefighter who gripe or grips the devil

close to his chest, a hug

so that he can't strike. It's a sad weapon.

Two years after I place someone

just as bad as you. Who knows

whether evil was in your

heart & if it was, why

it was lay there, maybe

by someone more inhuman to you

than you were to me

Probably to this day you don't know

your unfair like my mother and father, you remember

the beneficial stuff. I loved to dance

& one time giving you another chance not

to abandon me you walked toward me

on a dance floor. I stood there, stepping

out of my material part hopeful, glad, my arms

opening to take you in. You glided right

by me to another girl. Humiliation

was your middle name.

Now you write hoping

I've forgotten, or that I've not

forgotten.

No, I am not the same.
