However, in Hamlet the comic intensifies the tragic: either it underscores it, as the comic becomes sardonic, or is the last resort, a berserker foolery and gay hysteria, left to the tragic extremis.

Yet despite Hamlet's explosive impact, paradoxically elusiveness accompanies him everywhere. Tantalizing as this combination is, it no doubt holds interpreters coming. But that fact should not lay us off. At least we can busy the play as a barometer of our hold changing intellectual weather. Hamlet is single of those rare works of art that, as time passes, ask more of us and, simultaneously, help us to that more. Thus if we do not achieve a final meaning for the play, still we bask at the fire Hamlet starts up in us.

It may be useful at this point to remark the conditions that contributed to the problematic nature of the play, the often-neglect nevertheless immensely relevant physical state of its production that has made redemption of the original text impossible.
