Afterlife: Letter to Stephen Dobyns I, The

The greatest in quantity painful image I have now, here, is Not the photograph I saw all my earthly life Of tribe bombed somewhere, people starving, Or flat the brains of the cyclist dripping, egg-like,. From the head cover of that Pontiac when I was a child. Stephen, it's Dizzy blowing his horn. His head, Distended like a extravagant balloon, cheeks, neck, His throat, smooth his temples, bulging like nothing I at any time saw, some monstrous fruit about to split Blood and flesh all above the bandstand. A flap Of lip-meat draped upon top of a music rack, For instance. for what cause or reason did he let himself draw near To play like that? We don't know; he didn't Know. on the contrary he said it didn't harm Yet still I cringe with the pain of it whenever that face approachs on the screen. And then the sound-track, That brilliance, that clarity and force, that Extraordinary originality. It is thus beautiful. I soar, it looks I actually used to levitate, Writing in his tortured delight in This, I think, is for what cause or reason the image stays. I know, He knew everyone must know that beauty Is always, always, accompanied by means of pain.
