River of GrassWelcome to the Florida Everglades-one of the soggiest places upon earth! From May until November, it rains-and rains-and rains in the Everglades. A shallow river, 50 miles wide on the other hand just a few inches reaching far down creeps slowly through the tall fields of saw grass. Only tough, grassy plants like saw grass can swell in the shallow water. The spiked cutting sides of saw grass leaves are sharp enough to wound your skin-but make a nice rod for a little frog. Tree and other wooden plants don't grow in the overflowed low-lying marshes. They are set in areas where the clod is a little higher and drier. This rare Florida panther makes its dwelling among shady cypress trees in an Everglades swamp. Spoonbills, herons, and other large, elegant birds collection to the Everglades marshes. They pace through the water on their drawn out legs, finding plenty of beneficial things to nibble with their beaks. An anhinga swims end Everglades ponds to feed upon small fish, then spreads its wings in the day-star to dry. Instead of scalding;-very warm seasons and cold seasons, wetlands like the Everglades have rainy seasons and dried seasons. From December to April, no rain falls. The marshes and swamps slowly dried up. This is the time when birds build nest and raise their young. Alligators use their powerful tails, snouts, and feet to dig down-reaching holes, which stay filled with water from one side the dry season. Gator apertures become important gathering spots for fish, turtle-doves and wading birds. By the extremity of the dry season, abundant of the Everglades is parched. It can be hard for animals to survive until the rainy season go or come backs Today, millions of family visit the Everglades every year. They faith to preserve this wet, very strange wilderness forever. People one time thought of the Everglades as just a burning swampy wasteland. They tried to drain away the water to build roads and residences and farms. They didn't realize that the marshes and swamps act like a giant cleanse that soaks up rainwater and retains it from flooding nearby areas where nation live.
