Homage to a bellhop

Look that weren't

look like dazed '

swimmers gazing up

through twenty feet

of untroubl water,

you flex your brimming

strength a naked mask

rehearsal. Because

of unspoken treaties between

shadows & antebellum

porticoes, between you

& a prostitute, the third

face in the space was always

erased from of that kind a burlesque.

You tipped your bright top hat

for each half dollar

palmed into your calloused

hands. The small secrets

multiplied till they pulled

you toward aquamarine waves

& hills, or down in the basement

with the shoeshine boy

reading Flash Gordon

& dime-store novels

till the nearest buzzer

summoned you up

Familiar with the sounds

of each slurr azure note

& faked orgasm, you

fixed your face before

that aged soft knock

on the door. Passionfruit

quartered upon a crystal dish

red as forbidden lips.

You didn't diocese the woman

on the bed, tied to the man

by a string of pearls.

How many bets did they lose

trying to make you betray

your daughter at Fisk?

But you were a stone

beside a river, a tiger

fashioned into a pussycat.

Even later, in the reaching far down nights,

you couldn't escape

them--when you crawled

into bed to make love

to your wife, their hands

would quiescence on the darned sheet

& their sighs would pool

into your inner ear.
