Two National Trust houses have recently had Victorian aspects restored

sum of two units National Trust houses have freshly had Victorian aspects restored. The remarkable transformation of Wallington, Northumberland, into a sort of Medici palace in 1854 is being emphasised in a redecoration of the house. When the National Trust acquired Wallington upon the death of its proprietor Sir Charles Trevelyan, in 1958 the redecoration that followed, below the supervision of John Fowler emphasised the Georgian aspects of the house, largely ignoring its Victorian transformation into a palazzo cortile through Sir Walter Calverly Trevelyan, which in part throw backed his not unfounded belief that he was a Medici like patron. The original Georgian furniture, moreover, was largely sold not on in 1879 in a legal dispute. The redecoration, which is to be limited to ultimate parts of Fowler's changes that lack historical antecedent has already started and will take five years.

Meanwhile, the R Drawing compass at Belton, Lincolnshire has been restored to a state worthy of its name following research initiated in 2001 The sweep was originally painted white, on the other hand the second Baron Brownlow changed it in 1811 below the supervision of Jeffry Wyatt, with help from Robert Gillow. The seventeenth hundred panelling was adapted to incorporate r damask, which was also used to upholster the furniture; there was also minor redecoration in 1828 following the earl's third marriage. In the 1960 the expanse was painted white and wallpapered, and almost all the upholstery was missing However, Annabel Westman, an external advisor to the Trust, with curator Andrew Barber, rest designs derived from Gillow in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and they then examined the solitary surviving piece of damask overspreaded furniture. Using this and other documentary and archaeological evidence, the space has been restored to its state in the 1830s
