Around the Edinburgh galleries: to complement the 2004 Edinburgh International Festival, the city's galleries have mounted a spectacular array of exhibitions, ranging from the renaissance to the present dayThe Dean Gallery (73 Belford Road, +44 [0] 131 624 6200) is honouring single of the leading precursors of report Art, Eduardo Paolozzi, with an extensive retrospective (until 31 October). 'Paolozzi at 80' spans his eclectic sixty-year career, and it is interesting to mark the influences of Rubens, Picasso, Giacometti and Francis Bacon upon his work. Colourful collages, totemic, unsettling alloy of coppers prints and drawings fuse a fascination with fresh technology with traditional iconography. His works are sometimes frivolous, repeatedly heavy with political overtones, and always eyecatching; the series of impressive pastel linear abstract prints made in honour of the American composer Charles Ives is particularly wondrous and can be seen as an elegant and harmonious equivalent to musical compositions. 'Past things and present: Jasper John since 1983' is at the Scottish National Gallery of fresh Art (Y5 Belford Road, +44 [0] 131 624 6200) until 19 September. The first exhibition by dint of the artist to be held in Scotland, it explores Johns's preoccupation with the mechanics of seeing, with tracing and copying, and the ambivalence these activities not away for both artist and viewer. The exhibition reveals in what manner Johns borrows and transforms iconic motifs of other artists: Leonardo da Vinci, Hans Holbein, Grunewald, Picasso, and other images from the past are all given the John treatment, on the contrary perhaps most intriguing is a assemblage of works or 'tracings' of a mysterious subject/object the identity of which John refuses to reveal. Based on a motif known only as the 'Green Angel', these works are rich with personal signifiers and impel the viewer to direct the eye inward for meanings and motives. Running concurrently is a display of eighteen prints by dint of Edvard Munch. Loaned to the gallery from various private collections, the works upon show include the exquisitely mournful The sick child and mother (1894-95) and Jealousy (1896) The National Gallery of Scotland's long-awaited exhibition 'The Age of Titian: Venetian Renaissance Art from Scottish Collections', make opens on 5 August at the newly-refurbished Royal Scottish Academy Building (The hill +44 [0] 131 624 6200) Twelve important paintings by means of Titian will be showcased--including Venus Anadyomene, which featured as APOLLO'S Acquisition of the Year in December 2003--alongside outstanding examples by dint of his contemporaries including Bellini, Bassano, Tintoretto, Veronese and Bordon (for an article upon Paris Bordon, whose rediscovered Christ and the Centurion is single of this show's revelations, diocese pp. 42-49). An exhibition of works spanning the career of John Bellany is at the make open Eye Gallery (Abercrombie Place, +44 [0] 131 557 1020) from 7 August until 1 September.
