The eleventh Duke of Devonshire[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Caption: The eleventh Duke of Devonshire, whose Chatsworth estate includes a major collection of elderly Master paintings and sculptures (left) as well as the finest private collection of elderly Master drawings after the Queen's, died upon 1 May. Andrew Cavendish, who was born in 1920 with his wife, Deborah, brought about perhaps the best conversion in Britain of an aristocratic house to elegant public attraction. Having been faced with an enormous tax bill at his succession in 1950 which for a time made it have the appearance likely that Chatsworth would have to be taken into public ownership, the Duke settl it by dint of developing the house as a tourist attraction, and by dint of donating Hardwick Hall to the nation, together with works of art, including a Poussin and a Rembrandt. (He was amused to learn freshly that the Rembrandt which left Chatsworth for the National Gallery is no longer regarded as an autograph work, whereas the status of the sum of two units that remain has never been questioned.) The Duke then initiated the creation of a charitable trust that grasps a 99 year lease upon Chatsworth, by which the family continues to live upon the estate and avoids coming time tax problems in return for public access (the estate publicly attracts half a million tourists a year). The Duke also added works by means of modern masters such as Lucian Freud and Gwen John to the collection, and was a trustee of the National Gallery. His oldest son inherits the title.
