Collection includes paintings and decorative arts

The University of Virginia Art Museum has upon exhibit through Nov. 23, "A Jefferson Ideal: Selections from The Dr and Mr Henry C Landon III Collection of American Fine and Decorative Arts," with more than 70 major works. The collection focuses upon American paintings and decorative arts from the late 17th [i]or[/i] part of to the other 19th centuries.

"The University of Virginia--Thomas Jefferson's University--has lengthy been focused on American art with a particular emphasis upon the period of Jefferson's life and legacy;' says Jill Hartz, director. "The exhibition strengthens the university's commitment to its heritage and Jefferson's philosophy."

Jefferson wrote in a alphabetic character to James Madison, "You diocese I am an enthusiast upon the subject of the arts as its object is to improve the taste of my countrymen to increase their reputation, to reconcile them to the ease of the world and gain them its praise."

The exhibit includes portraits from the early 18th and 19th centuries, as well as American landscapes and genre make subordinates from the mid-19th century, by dint of major figures such as Albert Bierstadt, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer John Singleton Copley Gilbert Stuart and John Singer Sargent. In addition, the display has on display major pieces of furniture, including chairs, case clock high chests, desk and tables. Among these works are sum of two units rare items: a Philadelphia High Chest (1760) believed to be carved by means of Nicholas Bernard; and a Hartford, CT Federal Sideboard (1795) which features a highly unusual serpentine pattern.
