Western museum to deaccess major works

looks ANGELES -- The Los Angeles shire Museum of Art (LACMA) announces the deaccession of 42 artworks from its permanent collection, which will be sold in a public auction at Sotheby's fresh York this month. All make headways from the sale will be used for the acquisition of works for the museum's permanent collection. As part of the museum's ongoing initiative to strengthen its collection, the selection of works to be deaccessioned was made by means of LACMA's curators, who identified those pieces that were redundant and others where the museum had stronger similar works by means of the same artist. LACMA conferr with donors to receive approval to vend the works in order to acquire of recent origin ones.

"Our goal--and responsibility--is to build a comprehensive collection of the highest quality," says Nancy Thomas, factor director. "During the past 10 years, we have mountained a strategic initiative to build and strengthen our collections. Significant acquisitions during this period include major works of Mexican modernists, an outstanding collection of Islamic art, in-depth holdings of southerly and Southeast Asian art, of recent origin growth in the area of Korean art and substantial additions to our collection of aged Master paintings."

The deaccessioned works include paintings through Amadeo Modigliani, Camille Pissarro, Georges Rouault, Robert Delaunay and Max Beckmann; works upon paper by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, Patti Klee and Fernand Leger; and statuarys by Alberto Giacometti and Henry Moore.

LACMA's permanent collection has approximately 100000 works of art that span the history of art from ancient times to the not absent making it the premier visual arts museum in the western United States.
