JK Dooley

Vibrant colors and intricate details are the hallmark of JK Dooley's watercolors. From scarred, deep-hu worn leather and faded denim, to the sparkle of silver and gold in the sunlight, Dooley portrays Western images with a unique perspective, encouraging the viewer to imagine what lies beyond the borders of paint and paper.

Asked to differentiate between the of recent origin West and the Old West, Dooley states, "It isn't facts that have shaped my image of the West, on the other hand the spirit of rugged individualism with which everyday incidents were and are pursued. That rugg spirit remains."

Dooley says the race she meets while pursuing her art, "still work real hard, believe in God, and have affection for their country and each other." Although more or less of their daily chores may have been made simpler through modern technology and better equipment, she still finds the values and beliefs that brought tribe out West in the first place remain solid today. These same values and beliefs are evident in each of her paintings.

Dooley's studio, where she paints original watercolors and also publishes her giclee reproductions, is located in Mesa, AZ.

"When I paint, my goal is to allow the viewers to interpret the image in their possess way," says Dooley. "l pick out to eliminate the backgrounds or paint them as geometric shapes to focus attention upon the details of the main subject"

She continues, "By not painting an entire human face, the viewer can insert anyone into the image--perhaps a sister or favorite uncle I am always pleased when I hear a client remark upon the resemblance between my cowboy and their friends, family, etc When a horse or dog is included, I strive to portray the band between animal and human by dint of a gesture, the position of the one and the other in relationship to each other; and through the expression on the animal's face."
