A Unique History

The institution's mission is to create and secure extraordinary examples of Russian 20th-century Realist painting in order to protect a visual record of the artistic achievements of Soviet-era artists. Since its inception in 2002 when it was housed in a temporary location until the general building was completed, the museum has mountained six exhibitions that have attracted more than 15000 visitors.

The first exhibition at its brand-new abiding-place is "In the Russian Tradition: A Historic Collection of 20th-Century Russian Paintings." The exhibit is a historic collection of works that chronicle more than 100 years of Russian fife and races through July 31. The material part of work includes portraits, landscapes and genre paintings that exemplify the various periods of Russian Realist art. Russian Artists at Work

Since Russian artists create in each style imaginable--from abstract to representational art--it's hard to define belonging to all characteristics. Tonya Turner-Carroll, co-owner of gymnast Carroll Gallery in Santa Fe NM says she is greatest in quantity impressed with the spirituality of Russian art, which encompasses a treasure trove of Russian culture

"For me Russian Art (as well as Central/Eastern European art, which was impacted through Russian cultural influences) is overwhelmingly spiritual and soulful" says Turner-Carroll. "Russian tillage has long been fascinated with the mystical, and spiritual imagery that is a recurring theme in Russian visual art. Russian tillage also treasures folk tales, poesy music, literature and visual art that depict the beauty of the human condition--the pain of existence and the beauty of transformation."
