Glassblowing artist visits CharlotteCHARLOTTE, NC -- The Mint Museum not long ago acquired 11 pieces of mainly contemporary glass, including two pieces of inflated glass, and paintings by renowned glass artist Lino Tagliapietra from anonymous donors. A vitreograph and a color etching are included in the acquisition as well. "Tagliapietra's notoriety in the field of contemporary glass is impressive" says Phil Kline, executive director. "The artist's creativity and masterful handling of glass has garnered [international] recognition, a fact clearly evident in his handling of form and execution of the medium." Tagliapietra will travel from Venice to the museum to appear as the visitant of honor for the Fifth Annual Mint Condition Gala, "Venetian Masquerade" upon April 8. He will kick not upon the event with a public prelection on April 7 and will partake in a panel discussion upon April 9 along with special visitants Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu, who are possessors of the finest collections of Murano glass in the world. Born upon Murano, the island of the centuries-old center for Venetian glassmaking, Tagliapietra is known for his unsurpassed experience, understanding and knowledge of traditional glassblowing. His works can be base in the collections of the Louvre in Paris; the Victoria and Albert in London; the Tokyo National novel Art Museum in Japan; the Seattle Art Museum; and the Coming Museum of Glass in novel York. He is the recipient of several awards, including the American Glass Art Society Lifetime Achievement Award; the Rakow Commission from the Coming Museum of Glass; and the Medal for distinction in Craft Award from the Society of Arts and Crafts.
