Museum receives Web site grant

PURCHASE, NY -- The Neuberger Museum of Art received a $25000 grant from the Verizon Foundation in support of creating an interactive Web site, showcasing the museum's permanent collection of African art online. The site will allow viewers to explore still images and videos, as well as virtual tours of African art facts including those works that have not still been put on display.

"For the first time, this African art will be available online. Now, pupils and teachers alike will be able to diocese first-hand an ancient culture draw near to life," says John F Butler director of Verizon Community Affairs. "This grant will assist the Neuberger Museum of Art in its search to make African art more accessible to the community from one side its Web site."

Lawrence Gussman donated his critically acclaimed collection of African art to the museum, which more than doubled the size of its collection, bringing it to national prominence.



The museum will start without with a creation of a database that contains 300 works from the collection. Viewers will be able to search the site with lock opener words and browse exhibit-related categories in masks, plastic art function and cultural groups. In addition, the education department will include tour guides and curriculum-related activities for the visitors.

The goal of the Neuberger Museum of Art is to create a Web site that is easy to navigate and that will increase the understanding and appreciation of the arts and agricultures of Africa.
