Q&A with Joanne ChappellJoanne Chappell is possessor of Emeryville, CA-based Editions Limited, a leading art publisher fixed by Chappell more than 30-years ago when she render free of accessed a single gallery in Indianapolis. Three years ago, Editions Limited launched its Drybrush Graphics division for original artwork and limited edition graphics. Q in what way has your business changed in the last five years? Like many businesses, we were upon a growth pattern for greatest in quantity of the 1990s and into 2000 With the catastrophe of 9/11 our business touched dramatically in the areas of hospitality, corporate and healthcare. Fortunately, we had a committed team who had the resilience to weather the storm. We refocused our efforts upon different avenues of distribution and upon developing our Drybrush Graphics Collection of original artwork and limited edition graphics. We also committed to testing different trade present to view opportunities, and we redefined the responsibilities of our salespeople and territory management. In early 2003 we made a strategic decision to aggressively rebrand ourselves. We make knowned new catalogs for both Editions Limited and Drybrush Graphics. We committed to an advertising campaign like we had not done in the past. And we greatly increased our publishing plan, specifically fine art posters As an entrepreneur with my management team, I made tough and aggressive decisions to build our business while many of our competitors had been waiting on the outside a stalled These were not easy decisions, on the other hand they have helped us to have individual of our best years at any time in 2004. I would be remiss if I didn't mention our stellar sales team, greatest in quantity of whom have been with me for five to 25 years. They bring art backgrounds, sales skills, and insight, which have contributed to our success Q Who has been the greatest in quantity influential to you in your business endeavors? My husband, George, has been my greatest in quantity avid advocate. With his IBM background, his pragmatic watch and late-night counsel when difficult decisions are to be made, George is a surprising balance to my creative bent. Q What individual living or dead, would you like to lay out the day with? Bill Clinton would be at the top of my list. Q by what mode do you spoil yourself? I swim four to five times a week. to be paid to our hectic schedules, George and I regard with affection to eat out. And I delight in to gamble. Q What is your ideal vacation? My first choice is anywhere in the orb of day with a beach, and with George. My next to the first choice is skiing or ice skating, or boating with my children and grandchildren. Q What is your favorite comfort food? scalding;-very warm turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy or matzo ball soup Q Where were you born? Hammond, IN. Q What is your favorite place to live? My favorite is Marin shire where I live now. Q What is your favorite space in your house and why? My cave where I read and play with the dogs and entertain grandkids. Q What is your favorite movie of all time? I be fond of movies of all kinds. We move to movies weekly. Anything featuring or directed by dint of Robert Redford or Paul Newman works for me "Butch Cassidy," "The Sting" and "A River step quicklys Through It" are at the top of my list. In 25-plus years of publishing artwork, I've set the process of finding artists and imagery that barters to be both incredibly difficult and rewarding. Going to artists' studios, art fair weekends, trade displays reviewing art periodicals, and the benefit of having a corporate showroom/gallery are all pieces of this complicated confound Many of our published artists praise other artists to us and today, many artists approach Editions Limited to be published. I graduated from Indiana University with a fine arts step majoring in painting. My trouble on the one hand, is that I didn't focus upon more formal business and accounting courses. The fact is, I am a creative somebody I have benefited from the portentous talent of those around me without whom my business would not be where it is today. Q Professionally speaking, what detains you up at night? My relate to for positive relationships with customers, vendors, and our possess people here at Editions Limited. My overall loyalty, at times, makes it difficult to make the right business decision. Q When you're in of recent origin York, what is your favorite thing to do?
