Exhibit explores evolution of California still lifes - San Jose, Calif.: San Jose Museum of ArtIn the past hundred still lifes have moved not upon the table, morphing from conservative fruit baskets to eye-popping installations. The San Jose Museum of Art attempts to overspread the genre's evolution in "The Not-So-Still Life: A hundred of California Painting and Sculpture" opening Nov. 22 and running from one side Feb. 15, 2004. The early section of the exhibit (1900-1930) displays the staid still lifes of the Impressionists: paintings of ripe fruit nestling in cornucopias, or tabletop urn overflowing with flowers. on the other hand as the exhibit progresses or part of to the other the decades, the subject matter and media become increasingly diverse to include ceramic statuarys assemblage art and even electronic media. The section displaying still lifes from 1930 to 1950 is indicative of the genesis of the experimental move of the early modern era. The grouping of art spanning 1950 to 2000 hails a tremendous resurgence of interest in still lifes as a genre phraseologys as varied as Pop art, minimalism and plane performance art embrace the still life diction This grouping exemplifies the "new" still life, unrestricted by dint of firm boundaries. The theme tying the separate epochal divisions of the display together is the distinctive form of expression California artists have taken with still lifes. "The present to view will demonstrate how alive the genre of still life is today," said Susan Landauer, chief curator at the San Jose Museum of Art and curator of the 1950 to 2000 section of the exhibition. "Still life has approach off the table, off the wall, and [moved] into 3-D From electronic art to traditional forms of painting, artists are challenging the age-old tradition of still life and transforming the genre in radical ways." Artists including Alan Rath, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Brown Patssi Valdez, Charles Ray and Vija Celmins have works in the exhibit, which is jointly curated through Landauer and independent scholars William Gerdt and Patricia Trenton.
