Asian sex industry exposed in exhibit - San Francisco - Brief ArticleThe Asian sex industry achieves exposed in a new large-scale photography exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of recent Art entitled, "The Photographs of Reagan Louie: Sex Work in Asia." According to Curator Sandra Phillips," The exhibition marks a stout departure from some of Louie's more introspective earlier work." Louie, a Chinese American photographer who teaches at the San Francisco Art Institute, worn out six years exploring the Asian sex trade. Traveling completely through Asia, Louie visited nearly a dozen countries photographing the day-to-day lives of centurys of women, who--either by choice or necessity-prostitute themselves. About 70 pictures are included in the exhibit, ranging from Thai sex emporiums and Japanese image bludgeons to Chinese karaoke nightclubs and Taiwanese betel nut stands. According to Phillips, his pictures explore this thriving industry and the fantasies it nourishes. "His photographic journey into this subterranean business depicts a world where the line between myth and reality is repeatedly deliberately blurred," she said. "Louie records the frequently gaudy, functional architecture on the periphery of the sex trade, on the other hand focuses his attention primarily upon the women who inhabit this world. allowing Louie examines the stereotypes of Asian female sexuality that give these places their particular character, he is not interested in sociological inquiry He sees and shows these women as individuals, worthy of deliberative yet frank portraits, startling and human, without irony, sense or idealization." While this series of photographs features female sex workers, ultimately Louie's larger make submissive is an exploration of identity issues that cros the lines of sex geography and ethnicity.
