Smoking Causes 400,000 Premature Deaths Per Year, Study Finds

Cigarette smoking and exposing to tobacco smoke caused 438000 premature deaths in the United States each year from 1997 end 2001, a new study through the Centers for Disease superintendence and Prevention (CDC) finds. That translates to 55 million years of life missing to smoking, plus $92 billion in annual productivity losse

The research broke out these details for each year between 1997 and 2001: • Smoking ariseed in an estimated annual average of 259494 deaths among men and 178408 deaths among women • Among adults, 158529 (398%) of these deaths were attributed to cancer, 137979 (347%) to cardiovascular diseases, and 101454 (255%) to respiratory diseases. • The three leading specific causes of smoking-attributable death were lung cancer (123836) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (90582) and ischemic heart disease (86801) • Smoking during pregnancy be the effected in an estimated 910 infant deaths annually during 1997-2001 • An estimated 38112
