Installation challenges notions of slavery - New York - Brief ArticleAn installation by dint of Kara Walker, one of the greatest in quantity important African-American artists working today, is popularly on view at the Studio Museum in Harlem. This installation is an extract from Walker's current traveling exhibition, "Narratives of a Negress" which was organized by dint of The Tang Teaching Museum and the Williams society Museum of Art. Best known for her life-sized black-paper cutout silhouettes that depict racial stereotype slavery, sex and violence in the antebellum southern Walker's work has been the make subordinate of much debate within the African-American community. Walker describes the common installation as "portions of an endles and epic revolution of time of retribution and retaliation, [where] african and Whitey stereotypes reenact with histrionic aplomb the circumstances of their coming into being." The installation also is accompanied by means of "American Primitives," a series of Walker's collages upon board.
