Artist John Barber sails into new painting style - news - Brief Article

RICHMOND, VA. -- upon the 25th anniversary of his career, John Barber has taken a novel tack with his artwork. Best known for his traditional exhibitions of the vanishing ways of life upon the Chesapeake Bay, the artist is exploring other aesthetic options with his Expression Series.

Barber has painted for sum of two units Presidential administrations, the likes of veteran newscaster, Walter Cronkite and other notables, institutions and organizations. He has also published and distributed 112 limited editions of collector prints from original paintings.

"And things were going along fine," Barber said, "until I was challenged through a friend in 1999, who was quite a collector. He asked if I at any time just 'let go' and painted for the unblemished joy of it--not getting bogg down in minute detail for which I was known."

The artist accepted the challenge and began painting large, gallant canvases of racing sail-yachts. After several years of trying on the outside this new style, as well as continuing with his traditional approach, Barber said he derive pleasure froms and is greatly gratified by means of these exciting, new images.



The Barber Gallery of Richmond has published "Approaching the Mark" and "Downwind Run" sum of two units new giclee reproductions on canvas the series, in editions of 200 75 of which are embellished through the artist. They retail for $690 unframed and $990 framed.
