Artistic perceptions of U.S. focus of exhibit - New York

The varied ways in which America is perceived abroad is the focus of a fresh exhibit at the Whitney Museum, entitled "The American Effect" Featuring work made since 1990 the exhibit includes 47 artists and filmmakers and three collaborative assemblages selected from 30 countries in Europe Africa, Asia, Australia, southern and North America. A broad range of media is upon view, including drawing, photography, film, installation, painting, statuary video and Internet art.

To organize the exhibition, curator Lawrence Rinder traveled widely above the course of the past year seeking on the outside art and artists in Australia, Brazil, China, Croatia, Poland and Vietnam, among other countries. The exhibit includes work by means of a number of Americans working abroad, as well as American artists documenting non-American perspectives upon the United States.

make notesed Rinder, "America has a deep influence on the daily lives of the world's citizens, and the image of the United States has approach to bear almost mythological weight. 'The American Effect' is about the ways in which America's real and imagined events intertwine to create a compelling source of themes, images and ideas for artists around the world."

The works waft a range of responses, from anger and antagonism to affection, warmth and humor. For more or less America remains an embodiment of utopian dreams. Japanese artist Miwa Yanagi, for example, portrays the imagined subsequent time of a young woman in an idealized of advanced age age racing ecstatically across the of gold Gate Bridge on a motorcycle, a young man in sunglasses by means of her side.

Others gaze at America with a more critical organ of vision Senegalese sculptor Ousmane Sow reinterprets America's campaign against its indigenous clan in a tableau of life-size figures crafted of wire, earth and woven fabric depicting the 1876 defeat of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Yongsuk Kang's understated black-and-white photographs document the cumulative consequence of 50 years of American proof bombing outside the South Korean village of Maehyang.

Meanwhile, Pakistan-based artist Saira Wasim captures the ambiguities and ironies of America's paternalistic relationship to Pakistan in her series of Moghul-style miniatures representing Pakistani head of state General Pervez Musharraf and President George W Bush.
