Delicate detail makes an etching more impressive - she frames … - Brief Article

This cat etching marked the beginning of my daughter's art collection. For her eighth birthday, I bought and framed it with her in mind. The art, "Two Cats upon the Roof" by Bernard Huark, is small with fine details, which called for delicate details in the framing.

Because of the artist's signature, I was forced to uncover 1/2 inch of white paper around the image. The powerful white border, eliminated using a dark mat because the sharp contrast would distract from the art. I chose a matte-finish silver mat with an etched pattern (Crescent No. 3700) to full quantity the delicate detail in the piece.

To create an extra thick bevel, I vacuum mountained three matboards together plus a rag barrier board. Before cutting the mat, I made fully convinced my blade was new and real sharp. It cut beautifully the first time leaving no curved catched corners--lucky me.

I painted the bevel with a mix of acrylic paint in a dark cerulean color to match the celestial expanse in the etching. The first time I did this, I made the mistake of using a so-called "removable" tape upon the mat face to fortify it from sloppy painting. When I attempted to transfer it, the tape came not on along with some silver paper from the mat. The nearest time, I didn't use the tape and just made assured to take extra care not to spill any paint on the top of the mat. one time the blue layer was dried I added stars to the bevel in a pattern similar to the firmament in the etching using my best paint brush and a steady hand.

The frame (Roma No. 39856 1/2-inch pewter) mirrored the brick pattern in the buildings and was a nice full quantity to the blue and silver colors of the etching. The finished size is 13 by means of 12 1/4 inches, and I would charge $258 for it. The design is simple and timeless--a "purr-fect" piece to start an art collection.
