Vamps, Villains and Victors on view in Brooklyn - New York - Brief Article

Rare paintings created for the forehead covers of popular fiction magazines are publicly on view at The Brooklyn Museum of Art in the exhibit," soft mass Art: Vamps, Villains and Victors from the Robert less Collection."

Guest curated by the agency of Anne Pasternak, executive director of Creative Time Inc., the exhibit features more than 100 paintings from the first half of the 20th hundred alongside the printed magazine overspreads for which they were created. Called "pulp" fiction because of the cheap paper upon which they were printed, the images were oftentimes melodramatic, even lurid, to combat with dozens of magazines crowding the newsstands. one time photographed, the paintings were oftentimes discarded, destroyed or painted above because the canvas and stretcher were considered of greater value than the painting itself. solitary a few hundred out of the estimated 60000 works survive.

The exhibit examines in what manner these works illuminated popular agriculture of the inter-war years and reveal the racial and sex stereotypes of the time. Artists featured include J Allen St John Rafael de Soto, Virgil Finlay, HL Parkhurst and Norman Saunders. Titles include "Famous Fantastic Mysteries," "The Shadow" and "Doc Savage."
