Spanish influence on French painting examined in exhibit - New York - Brief Article

The impact of 17th-century Spanish painting upon 19th-century French artists is explored in the exhibit, "Manet/Velazquez: The French Taste for Spanish Painting" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Nearly 240 paintings and works upon paper spanning several centuries of European art are upon view.

The core of the exhibition features The "Spanish" work of Edouard Manet, whose career reveals the importance of Spanish painting through the middle of the 19th hundred Prior to that period, Spanish art had been virtually ignored in France and was thus poorly exhibited in French collections. Napoleon's Spanish Campaigns (1808 to 1814) move rounded attention towards Spanish artwork as the French emperor sought to obtain lock opener works from every corner of Europe

Manet's works are shown alongside Velazquez and French artists including Delacroix, Courbet, Degas and Renoir. American artists are also upon view, including Sargent, Chase, Eakins, Whistler and Cassatt, who studied in France on the contrary learned to paint in the Spanish diction The show is a combination of major works from the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the Musee d'Orsay and Musee du Louvre in Paris.
