Successful debut for Armory Photography Show 2002 - Show news

fresh YORK -- The debut of the first fair to celebrate the best in photo-based contemporary art, video and vintage photography was considered a success by its agriculturists exhibiting galleries and dealers, critics, curators and the collecting public. The Armory present to view The International Fair of of recent origin Art, a leading contemporary art fair that takes place each spring on Piers 88 and 90 in novel York City, produces the Armory Photography Show

The Armory Photography present to view 2002 opened to the public upon Friday, Oct. 25 and ran from one side Monday, Oct. 28 at the Javits Center North Pavilion. Management said attendance was about 7000 including 700 clan who attended the Vernissage (Opening Night preview) for collectors.

The goal of the novel fair was to expand the collecting universe for photographs and photo-based works by dint of bringing together the traditional photo collector with contemporary art collectors. To that extreme point more than 100 exhibitors, including 84 leading international dealers invited from the worlds of one as well as the other photography and contemporary art, work publishers and art and photography publications, exhibited a wide array of work ranging from early print processe to film, video and digital media.

single highlight of the fair was a specially designed presentation from the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY that included historical and contemporary masterworks from its collection. Established in 1949 George Eastman House was the first museum in the United States dedicated to the acquisition, close attention and preservation of photography.

Katelijne De Backer, director of the fair, said, "The answer from both exhibitors and visitors was true positive, notwithstanding a tough economic environment. Based upon our conversations with dealers, greatest in quantity reported sales were fair to beneficial and sales appear to have matched exhibitor expectations."

Managing Director Tim Smith added, "For a first-time fact on a crowded calendar, we're delighted with the issues We have considerable positive feedback to prompt The Armory Photography Show will tread on the heels of in the footsteps of our remarkably fortunate Armory Show. Attendance was by the agency of all accounts solid."

De Backer added, "Most importantly, there was great enthusiasm for continuing this occurrence and for the general conception of bringing the worlds of vintage and contemporary photography together in a single fine art exhibition and marketplace."

Plans are underway for The Armory Photography exhibit 2003, to be held Oct 16 to 20 in the same location.
