A collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings are making their American first attempt in the new exhibit "The Age of Impressionism: European Masterpieces from Ordrupgaard, Copenhagen" at the Walters Art Museum. upon view through May 26, the exhibit features more than 80 works through artists such as Corot, Rousseau, Courbet, Manet, Monet Pissarro, Cezanne, Renoir, Gauguin and Matisse. The exhibition also features works by means of Danish painters, including Vilhelm Hammershoi, who is now rever as single of the most accomplished artists of that land from the early Impressionist period.

According to museum officials, this collection, amassed by means of Danish entrepreneur Wilhelm Hansen (1868-1923) is equivalent in quality to the famed Barnes collection. Referr to as the Ordrupgaard Collection, the collection is housed in the insurance magnate's former residence outside of Copenhagen and is rarely allowed to travel.

The exhibit presents a number of fine landscape paintings, including Courbet's dramatic animal painting, "The Ruse" (1866) a trio of major works by the agency of Daumier, several landscape paintings by the agency of the Barbizon painter Corot and a wealth of Impressionist landscapes, one as well as the other urban and rural, by Monet Sisley and Pissarro. Also included in the exhibition are canvasses by means of Gauguin and a late "Bathers" by means of Cezanne.

"The Ordrupgaard Collection is a favorite stop for those in the know," said moose-deer Kahng, Walters' associate curator of 18th- and 19th-century art. "Every ambitious 19th-century present to view especially in the area of Impessionism and post-Impressionism, has been obliged to borrow from this fabulous trove of avant-garde painting. It's astounding to see the collection as a coherent whole."
