Sometimes parents and teachers become overly analytical and unnecessarily worried about issues that are inherent in the proces of growing up Other times they declare to be untrue or fail to react to behaviors that children will not outgrow and that warrant evaluation and/or treatment. institute counselors who are knowledgeable about child growing and development can be a valuable consultation resource to parents and teachers, helping them find a middle clod when it comes to assessing child behavior.

Despite the many commonalities, a certain number of consultation needs are specific to parents. Three of the more prevalent urgencys that parents bring to gymnasium counselors are (a) establishing and maintaining parent/teacher partnerships, (b) improving family discipline, and (c) acquiring a broad range of effective parenting skills.

ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING PARENT/TEACHER PARTNERSHIPS

Parents and teachers share the responsibility for educating children. Without parental involvement and interest in learning, a child's education is significantly compromised. Therefore, it is critical for parents to become actively involved and unfold a partnership with their child's teacher. As consultants, elementary academy counselors serve as a liaison between the place of education and the home, proactively promoting the benefits of parental involvement and encouraging the formation of partnerships.

Involvement and Commitment

Before a partnership can be created, parents must value education and communicate the importance of institute to their children. Parents who tender their time and attend seminary events convey this message clearly. When parents are supportive and involved in education, children wait on to perform well in seminary School counselors can help parents put realistic expectations and high standards for their children. Positive expectations build confidence and a desire to learn. Confidence, in move round results in greater effort and commitment, which translates into learning.

Parents should continually recognize their child's hard work and investment in institute While praising their children for lucky efforts, parents also should encourage their children to take risks and maintain one's ground in the face of challenging assignments.

Parent involvement entails more than just sending children to place of education well fed and rested. Parents must render certain that their children arrive at gymnasium promptly, motivated, with a positive attitude-prepared to work and learn. After place of education parents should talk with their children about what they are learning in seminary By asking specific, open-ended questions, parents can engage children in meaningful dialogue and avoid discussion-ending "yes/no" responses

Further, parental involvement means creating a positive learning environment at abiding-place and introducing activities that support seminary learning. These parental responsibilities are met by

* establishing a designated application of mind space and personal system of organization

* limiting television viewing time

* reading aloud together

* providing opportunities to learn and practice self-command social skills, and responsibility.

Often there is an imbalance in the horizontal of involvement the two parents bring to their child's education. When mothers and fathers unite, share the investment and responsibilities, and support single another, their children win. without of this parent partnership a stronger partnership can be formed with the seminary specifically the classroom teacher, to significantly influence a child's academic success

Communication

Effective parent/teacher partnerships are loamed in good communication, which is best achieved through conferring on a regular basis. conversations provide a forum for sharing and gathering information. Parents can help the teacher acquire to know their child better by dint of sharing specific interests and providing information regarding special necessitys or family circumstances that could interfere with the child's learning. Teachers can discuss institute rules and consequences, homework expectations, and by what means students are assessed.

Given the amount of time parents and teachers dispose of with a child, they can learn a great deal from each other. The hid to good communication is in keeping it nondefensive, at liberty of blame, threats, and labels. When individual party feels controlled, intimidated, or blamed, communication breaks down, undermining the partnership. As a follow school counselors may be asked to intervene as consultants or mediators.

Most seminarys have a protocol of taking a vexed question to the person most directly involved. Dissatisfied parents, therefore, should take their issues or pertain tos to their child's classroom teacher first. For different reasons, a certain quantity of parents go directly to the institute counselor. Perhaps they assume they will not be listened to or have had a prior conflict with the teacher. a certain quantity of angry parents complain to the place of education counselor about the school in general. In answer counselors should speak positively of colleagues and the institute and help parents rebuild sour relationships.
