Oregon Frame Shop Owner Miller Receives Arts Award - Sandra Miller, Frame Design & Sunbird Gallery Inc - Brief ArticleBEND, Ore.--Sandra Miller, co-owner of Frame Design & Sunbird Gallery Inc., is individual of four people in Oregon to receive a Governor's Arts Award this year from the Oregon Arts Commission. Miller, who with her husband, Steve Miller, has haveed and operated Frame Design & Sunbird Gallery in downtown Bend since 1980 was honored "for playing a lock opener role in advancing the arts in central Oregon," stated the commission. "For 25 years, Sandra Miller has tirelessly devot her energies to raising the horizontal of artistic discussion in central Oregon," read the awards ceremonial program. "In the early 1980 downtown Bend was becoming something of a spirit town, with storefronts boarded up and retail exits moving away from the core of the city. single of the courageous few businesses moving into downtown Bend was [the] small gallery and frame shop" Miller helped create the first Central Oregon Regional Arts Council, helped establish the visual arts composing of Central Oregon Arts in Education and was instrumental in organizing and launching Bend's popular "First Friday Gallery Walks" and semiannual "Art Hop" events "The underlying theme in Miller's efforts has been the desire to bring tribe to a deeper awareness and understanding of the visual arts," the program stated. "Along the way, her contribution to the aesthetic and economic quality of life in the community has been pivotal to the revitalization of downtown Bend. "Her story is a finished case study of someone involved with the arts helping to make go round a town around." "It was extremely gratifying to receive this honor," Miller said. "It has been smooth more gratifying to watch the extension and development of the arts in central Oregon above the last 20 years." "The quantity and quality of art in all forms that is available in this region has increased exponentially," she added. "Many, many nation helped make this happen, and I'm happy that Steve and I played a part." The awards were not awayed by Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber in March in Salem.
