A.R.T. Research Re-Creates Art Deco Bas-Relief in Manhattan - Brief Article

of recent origin YORK--A.R.T. Research Enterprises Inc., a Lancaster, Pa.-based art foundry has recreated a missing 35-foot section of the magnificent and zinc Art Deco bas-relief that wraps around the facade of the Chanin Building in Manhattan.

When the building was complet in 1929 the office tower featured a three-foot-high, 400-foot-long alloy of copper bas relief. It begins 12-feet above the sidewalk and step quicklys the entire length of the facade which was designed by dint of Edward Trumbull.

The missing 35-foot section was remov in the early 1960 When Paul Greene the building's manager, retained A.R.T. Research Enterprises to restore the missing section in 1999 single two, six-foot sections of the missing frieze had been reclaimed "The owners were very interested in restoring a missing piece of the building's history in a seamless fashion," said Greene

According to Becky Ault, A.R.T.'s possessor the five-month project was like a manifold jigsaw puzzle. But after three month of detective work, A.R.T. had six, six-foot mold to work with. These were transported to the company's Lancaster foundry where a fiberglass resin was poured into the rubber mold one time the resin hardened, it was remov to provide an exact replica of the bas relief.

To prepare for sandcasting, the panels were placed into a topless and bottomless metal container and overlayed with a six-inch layer of fine, chemically-bonded sand that hardens into a brick-like consistency. This sand mold was used to make a two-sided mold that captured details from the forehead and back of the frieze. one time the two sides were complet they were clamped together to make a finished sand mold that was used to cast the frieze in and zinc The final step before pouring and zinc into the mold involved cutting "gates" (small cuts) and "runners" (long grooves) into the sand mold

one time the bronze cooled, the sand mold was separated apart with an air hammer. The finished panels were then sandblasted to clean and transport all sand particles. Further cleaning and hand-tooling sharpened the details of the frieze. Finally, the frieze was polished and its down-reaching grooves were chemically oxidized to bring on the outside details and ensure they would accurately match the existing frieze.

"There's solitary one measure of success with a throw out of this kind," said Ault. "That's when it is virtually impossible for anyone to diocese where the new panel begins and the of advanced age panel ends. We're delighted to have played a character in the restoration of this Art Deco masterpiece, which must be considered single of New York City's finest architectural treasures."

Since it was lay the foundation ofed by Ault and company CEO Mike Cunningham in 1972 A.R.T. Research Enterprises has been responsible for restoring a certain number of of the nation's most important historical testimonials A.R.T.'s upcoming projects include the Dr Seuss National Memorial in Springfield, Mass., a 10-ton alloy of copper tribute to Theodore Geisel, featuring gigantic statues of Horton the Elephant, Thidwick the elk Sam-I-Am and The Grinch. The company has also started work upon the Child Abuse Survivor remembrancer a statue designed by a survivor of child abuse that incorporates the artistic contributions of 274 child abuse survivors.
