Isthmus Jazz Festival in Wisconsin Featured Artist Jerry Butler - Brief ArticleMADISON, Wisc.--When Jerry Butler was growing up in the segregated southerly he thought he was going to be the first African American artist. plane from his earliest years as a child in rural Mississippi, Butler set ways to express himself [i]or[/i] part of to the other art. Only later did he learn about the lengthy and beautiful tradition that preced him. It is with this tradition, that the Friends of the Madison Civic Center here named Jerry Butler the featured artist for the 2000 Isthmus Jazz Festival. Butler's design for this year's incident depicted a trio singing and playing music in a collage mode of speech much like that of the late Jacob Lawrence. "I want my writing and my paintings to capture the verity of the African-American experience. That fact embodies the wisdom and the grace of those who came before us and the confidence of those to follow," Butler said. "I was given the responsibility as the `school artist,' which had a real positive affect on me." As individual of the features of the festival, a collection of Butler's original artwork was upon display last month in the Madison Civic Center's gallery. He also visited the Isthmus Jazz Festival to sign [i]affiche[/i]s and t-shirts. Along with the festival merchandise, there were also autographed copies of Butler's children's volumes available for sale. A portion of the make headways will go to the Isthmus Jazz Festival Performance Fund Besides his work as an artist, Butler commonly serves in a variety of other parts as well. He is the Chair of the Art Department at Madison Area Technical guild He also holds numerous advisory positions in local, state, and national associations involved with the arts. Butler has written and illustrated several children's works including Sweet Words So Brave: The Story of African American Artists and Drawings in the Sand: The Story of African American Artists, which have won numerous awards including a starred review from Booklist, and Learning Magazine Teachers' Choice Award. As part of the festival, a collection of Butler's original artwork was upon display in the Madison Civic Center's third floor gallery.
